When I first went back to school, psychology felt like the right choice. Understanding what makes people tick and how they develop has always fascinated me in terms of human behavior, performance, and development. But as I got deeper into the field, I realized that making a broader impact would likely require a Ph.D., which wasn’t the path I wanted. That’s when I made the shift to an MBA, a more practical degree where I could still dive into topics like leadership and team dynamics but in a way that would directly apply to real-world challenges.
A Broader Perspective from Architecture
My background in architecture also shaped my approach to leadership and business. It taught me to look at the bigger picture, think creatively, and approach each problem as part of a larger structure. These skills naturally transfer to leadership, where anticipating what we’re “building” is critical. Architecture taught me that no great structure comes together without a purpose, a plan, and a willingness to go against the grain.
Embracing Leadership in Recovery
Becoming a leader in the stroke community wasn’t something I planned, but five years into my recovery, it’s a role I’ve embraced. I understand the challenges and gaps survivors face, and I’m passionate about making the path a bit easier for others. Self-improvement has been essential in my recovery journey, and my MBA studies are another piece of that. I’ve learned a lot about time management, patience, and goal-setting—qualities that weren’t as critical to me before my stroke.
Balancing Recovery, Studies, and Work
Balancing recovery, studies, and my Survivor Science work has been a challenge. With daily exercise and health priorities, I’ve had to develop a new level of discipline and time management. The MBA has shown me the value of every opportunity to learn something new, and while I didn’t choose this path for myself, it’s brought me closer to my goals and given me a clearer sense of purpose.
Looking to the Future
With this MBA, I hope to grow Survivor Science, expand my consulting work, and eventually find a place in a team that values resilience and creativity. I’m excited to apply my skills in leadership, coaching, and business analysis and to share the unique insights my journey has given me. This is just the beginning of a path I believe will be impactful and rewarding.
Going back to school has been an empowering experience—one I didn’t fully expect but deeply appreciate. Every new skill and insight brings me closer to building the future I envision for myself and the community I want to impact.
